How to Disable PDF Download (View-Only Mode in the Browser)

When you share a PDF online, anyone can download it, print it, or save it to their device. If you are sharing sensitive documents — proposals, reports, course materials — you may want to keep them view-only. Here is how.

Why disable PDF downloads?

  • Protect intellectual property — Course content, ebooks, research
  • Control distribution — Prevent forwarding and unauthorized sharing
  • Maintain version control — Everyone sees the latest version, not a saved copy
  • Gate paid content — Ensure only paying customers can view, not download and redistribute
  • Compliance — Some documents must not be saved locally for regulatory reasons

How to disable PDF download with Hostupa

1. Upload your PDF

Drag your PDF into the Hostupa upload zone. It publishes with a built-in viewer.

2. Toggle "Disable PDF download"

On the project detail page, turn on the "Disable PDF download" toggle. This is available on the Pro plan ($22/month) and above.

3. Share the link

When visitors open the link, the PDF opens in a custom viewer that:

  • Blocks the download button — No "Save" or "Download" option
  • Blocks keyboard shortcuts — Ctrl+S, Ctrl+P, and right-click are disabled
  • Blocks context menu — Right-click "Save as" is prevented
  • Blocks print — The browser print dialog is suppressed

4. Combine with other protections

For maximum security, stack these features:

  • Password protection — Require a password before viewing (Solo+)
  • Email capture — Collect the viewer's email before viewing (Pro+)
  • Analytics — Track who views and how often
  • Custom domain — Use your branded URL for credibility

Limitations to be aware of

No method is 100% foolproof. A determined user can always take a screenshot or use a screen recorder. But disabling downloads stops the vast majority of casual sharing and makes intentional redistribution much harder.

What view-only mode does prevent: - Direct download via button or menu - Keyboard shortcut saves (Ctrl+S, Ctrl+P) - Right-click "Save as" or "Print" - Browser "Save page as"

What it cannot prevent: - Screenshots (any platform can screenshot) - Screen recording - Developer tools inspection (the PDF is rendered in a viewer)

Use cases for view-only PDFs

  • Online courses — Students view lessons but cannot redistribute them
  • Proposals and quotes — Clients read but cannot save and shop around
  • Investor materials — Sensitive financials stay on your terms
  • Legal documents — Contracts viewed but not saved locally
  • Premium reports — Gated content that maintains its value
